Introduction to Fighting With My Family Movie Review by Ms. H

Regardless of how you look at it, the Fighting With My Family movie is not a comedy even though it is categorized as such.  There are a few scenes bordering on funny, but they are few and far between. After watching Fighting With My Family, I would label this movie a drama -- and heavy on the drama.  That being said, the question is did this movie satisfy its goal to show that you should chase your dreams regardless of the obstacles. Read on to find out.

The Rock (Dwayne Johnson)  Used As Switch and Bait for Fighting With My Family Movie

You are probably familiar with the term “switch and bait”  This happens basically when you are lured into something, usually by false advertisement, only to find that the item or entity was not what you expected or is a “substitute” item.

Specifically, In the case of the Fighting With My Family movie, when you see The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in the movie trailers, you may think he has a major role in this movie.  To the contrary -- I think Dwayne Johnson appears for the sole purpose of getting people to watch this film. In the movie, he makes a few appearances -- but not enough to be an integral part of the movie.

Plot of Fighting with My Family Movie

Plain and simple -- the movie is about a wrestling family consisting of a brother and sister, mother and father -- who are all interested in the sport of wrestling. The story centers around the brother and sister, one who was picked for professional wrestling, while the other was not.  The conflict starts when the sister instead of the brother is selected -- instead of both.

My Issues with Fighting with My Family Movie

Even though this movie is based loosely on true events, I think the fact the brother was passed over and not selected was downplayed and probably should have been written differently.  On one hand the movie shows that he was obviously upset that he was not selected and on the other, the movie wants the audience to believe that at the end of the movie he was fine with this.

Of course, there was probably little he could do about the decision but to sugar coat this situation at the end of the movie  is a disservice to the audience -- leaving the audience to think he was not only satisfied, but was happy that he was not selected.

Additionally, I think the movie is sending an erroneous message that other people have the sole power to put you in a category -- and there is nothing you can do but accept it.

Entertainment Value of Fighting With My Family

The beginning of the movie can be described as a “snooze fest” with little happening that will hold your attention.  However, as the movie progresses, my interest picked up -- especially when what appeared to be a clique of female wrestlers seemed to ostracize Paige from the group.  Another high point of interest is the “Santa Clause” fight scene since I think it probably depicted how the sibling felt about being passed over for professional wrestling.

Assessment of Fighting With My Family

In a nutshell -- I was not too keen on The Rock switch and bait angle to this movie since he appeared for only a few minutes. The storyline was based on a true story, however, I think the movie may have sent an incorrect message about the idea of “following your dream”, especially when someone else other than yourself is making that determination.  To answer the above question, the movie did not portray the message fully to follow your dreams.

As mentioned above, the only stand-out portion of the movie to me was the “santa claus” fighting because it seemed more realistic than the other parts of the story.

Should you watch Fighting With My Family.? My recommendation is for you to skip this movie unless you are just curious or do not mind being underwhelmed.

Rating of Fighting with My Family//?

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Fighting with My Family 1 ½ stars.

Alita: Battle Angel Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to Alita: Battle Angel Movie Review by Ms. H

Were you looking forward to watching the Alita: Battle Angel movie as I was?  When I posted the movie poster for Alita: Battle Angel on facebook, I recall thinking that this movie is one that may be worth watching. Now that the movie has been released, here’s my take on Alita: Battle Angel. As an added bonus, I’ll advise whether or not I recommend that you watch Alita: Battle Angel that is currently showing in movie theaters.

Timeframe of the Alita: Battle Angel Movie

The Alita: Battle Angel movie is set in the future. I’ve noticed that lately the future is depicted in movies as being a haven for junkyards filled with metals.  Similar recent movies I've reviewed previously that displayed abundant scrap metals are Bumble Bee and A.X.L.as well as many others.  The difference here is the main character, Alita, happens to be the product of some of the metal scraps that were found by a scientist or doctor of sorts. Through the creative art of animation, motion-capturing, movie-magic, etc., Alita appears to be very life-like in actions and motions, even though she is essentially a robot.

Plot of the Alita: Battle Angel Movie

The plot revolves around the robot Alita and her acclimation to perform super-human actions, mostly when she is fighting against her enemies.  At the same time, she seems to suggest that she is actually human, which of course, she is not. She appears to have a human brain and can eat food just as regular humans, even though she is basically a robotic machine.

Focus of the Alita: Battle Angel Movie

There is a flying city that one of the characters, Hugo aspires to inhabit.  In order to do this, he has to perform some sort of feat. The villain, Vector, is played by Mahershala Ali who “promises” to fulfill Hugo's  aspiration for a price.  The plot is muddled when you realize that there is another goal in the movie -- which is to win a sporting event called motorball. If Alita wins the sport, she will earn a certain amount of money -- enough to help Hugo played by Keean Johnson get to the flying city.  The members of the opposing motorball team are not out to win against her -- but instead they intended to destroy her.

The Alita: Battle Angel Movie Fails

The major fail I saw was how the writer/director cast the male character, Hugo as extremely weak.  Spoiler Alert:  Even towards the end of the movie after he was somehow changed to a robot, he continued to appear as lacking strength. This is happening while on the other hand, Alita seems to become even stronger -- especially after she receives a second new mechanical body after her first one was destroyed.

Another problem with the Alita: Battle Angel movie was the repetitive battle scenes.  There were too many of the same backward flips, kicks and overall fighting choreography over and over again.

An additional fallacy of the Alita: Battle Angel Movie is the expectation that a robot can actually have feelings. Of course these scenarios are set in the future, but when it is all said and done, Alita is only a robot. Spoiler Alert:  Her robotic state is further proven when she actually removed her mechanical heart, held it in her mechanical hands to offer to Hugo to use as barter to make the money he needed to get to the flying city.

On a positive note, the animated portions of the movie were on point and it did appear as if the Alita robot was performing actions in the movie.

Assessment of the Alita: Battle Angel Movie

I think from a technical - movie-making standpoint, the movie, Alita: Battle Angel was passable.  But as a well-rounded movie with a solid entertaining storyline, I think this movie failed short.  The fight scenes were worth watching -- but not the same or similar ones again and again. I liked the fact that they made Alita overly strong -- because after all she is a robot, but I disliked how they perpetuated her male friend as weak by contrast.

Regarding the plots, I think that if this movie concentrated on Alita being a battle superhero instead of adding the sporting event scenario -- the movie would have fared much better.

Should you watch this movie? Of course, you may see the movie and form your own opinions. However, I am unable to wholeheartedly recommend that you watch the Alita: Battle Angel movie for the reasons included in my movie review above.

Rating of Alita: Battle Angel

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Alita: Battle Angel 1 ¾ stars.

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie Review by Ms. H

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part movie sort of sneaked up on me. One minute the movie was not out, and the next, it was showing in movie theaters. I did not see any trailers or promotions for this movie.  On second thought, this may be a good thing. Find out why from my movie review here.

Pros of Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

Short Movie Length of Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

This movie is not lengthy.  In fact, it lasts only 1 hour 47 minutes.  Once you sit down to watch the movie, just wait a few minutes and the movie will be over before you know it.

Superheros and Some Actors' Cameos in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

There are a few scenes showing superheros as well as movie actors as Lego characters.  Of the group I saw, I was impressed with the Wizard of Oz Lego characters as they danced together arm in arm. Unfortunately this scene appeared only a few seconds in the movie.

Cons of Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

Redundant Movie Title - "Lego Movie 2: The Second Part"

There is something to say about a movie that calls the sequel -- “The Second Part” after already adding a “2” after the title.  This is redundant and shows a lack of thought and attention that was used to name this movie.

Tiffany Haddish's Singing in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

I instantly recognized Tiffany Haddish’s voice as she played one of the major roles in this movie as a Lego character.  Sady, this character sings lead in a song which was not music to my ears. Tiffany Haddish said her goal was to do fifty movies by the time she is fifty years old. When she said this during one of her interviews, Tiffany Haddish added that the movies would not all be good movies.  Well, she can add this to her filmography as one of the bad ones.

Lego Movie 2: The Second PartLego Movie 2: The Second Part

Lack of Humor in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

Just so you know, the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part movie scenes change from animation to having real-life actors. If you see this movie, do not expect to laugh or even to crack a smile during either part.

It would be an understatement to say that I expected more humor in the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part movie. I watched the entire movie and can say there was only one part that made me laugh. The laugh I got was during the real-life segment when the the mother scolds the children for arguing with each other and calls down to the father for reinforcement. His response and how he said it was funny to me. That was the extinct of the humor from my viewpoint.

No Cohesiveness in the Storyline for Lego Movie 2: the Second Part Movie

To me, there was no cohesiveness in the movie storyline.  Initially, you may think that Emmet's goal is to save Lucy. But as the story progresses, you find that it’s really Lucy who is trying to save Emmet. Still as the movie goes on, you may think the plot involved Emmet trying to save himself from his future self.

Repetitive Scenarios  in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

I lost count of the number of times an animated Lego character in the movie would find itself isolated under the real dryer in the home.  The first time was sort of interesting, but after the third or fourth time, this action became old to me.

Poor Script for Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

It looks like the writers may have been under some sort of time-crunch to get this movie out. Not only did the script play like a rush job, but it looks like the writers wanted to put an end to this movie fast. Spoiler Alert: In fact, if you watch this movie, there will be a false ending -- but then (unfortunately)  the movie starts again.

Lackluster Songs in Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

None of the movie songs were catchy or seemed to be one that would find life outside of this movie.  There was even a song titled something to the effect of “This song will get stuck in your head” -- which of course it did not.  I forgot the song as soon as it thankfully ended.

Recommendations for Lego Movie 2: the Second Part Movie

Learn from Other Successful Cartoon - Animated Movies

A passable successful animated movie, among many, that I recall was Incredibles 2.  This movie had comedy, adventure, and suspense, all mixed in together.  I think the writers can take lessons or learn from these type animated movies if there are plans to make another Lego movie.

When a Movie is Not Ready for Release -- Don’t Release It

Lego Movie 2: The Second Part movie seemed like a conglomerate of scenes thrown haphazardly together. If there are any other subsequent Lego movies, the writers should take the time to develop a high quality script instead of the low standard animated cartoon that I saw.

Assessment of the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

Unfortunately, in my opinion, this movie was not humorous, funny, entertaining, or worth my time to watch. Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie’s savings grace was it’s a relatively short film and during the movie a few notable cameo actors and superheroes appeared as Lego characters.

A word of advice: If you are thinking about seeing the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part at the theaters, or anywhere for that matter, you may want to reconsider.

Rating of the Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars, I rate Lego Movie 2: The Second Part Movie 1 ¼ stars.

Introduction to Captain Marvel Movie Review by Ms. H I would like to start off my movie review with a question to Disney.  My question is...Really? With the millions of dollars that your mega company has  -- you could not come up with quality talent to bring to life Captain Marvel in a more entertaining light?   Instead of using money to fly planes in CA to announce the movie’s opening, Disney should have spent the money on the content itself. But I’m getting ahead of myself. It’s been...
