Introduction to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie Review by Ms. H

Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse is a Sony Pictures animated movie.  I made plans to see this movie as soon as it was released in movie theaters after seeing the trailer.  Personally, I would have preferred a non-cartoon version of Miles Morales as Spider-Man -- but it just so happens that the cartoon version turned out to be just as entertaining.  In fact, as you watch the movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, you may forget that the characters and actions are animated.

Plot of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie

I will not be including any spoilers in my movie review mainly because if possible, I recommend you see the movie in person if you can.  Aside from the plot of the movie, I think there are some inspiring - uplifting moments in the film as well as messages to live by. You will know what I’m talking about if you see the movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie.

Acting Skills Of Voice Actors in the Spider-Man:  Into the Spider-Verse Movie

For the most part, all the voice actors in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie did an adequate job.  I did not detect any that could have used improvement. This could be because quite a few “big name” actors are in this movie as voice actors -- including Nicolas Cage, Zoe Kravitz, Mahershala Ali and a few others.

Assessment of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

In my opinion, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie is one that can be enjoyed by the whole family.  It is rated PG, so the language is clean and is appropriate for all ages.  Additionally, I’m sure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will keep your interest with all of the action scenes as well as the good storyline that also has a hint of suspense mixed in.

Rating of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie 5 stars.

Green Book Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to the Green Book Movie Review by Ms. H

The Green Book movie has been released since Thanksgiving Day; however, I was in no rush to see it.  I saw the trailer and determined that this movie would not be of interest to me. After watching other movies that I preferred to see, I finally decided to see what this movie was all about -- especially since there is now Oscar buzz about it.  Was the movie worth the wait? Check out my movie review of Green Book to find out.

Plot of the Green Book Movie

Green Book is a movie that does not have an elaborate, complicated plot. The movie is set in the year 1962 and is simply about an African American pianist who hired a driver to take him to his engagements as he traveled in the deep south.  The trials and tribulations both experienced while traveling -- some good, but mostly bad are shown in the movie. The movie also included several scenarios of how they were treated by others as they traveled. Two band members usually traveled to these engagements in a separate car.

Acting Skills Displayed in the Green Book Movie

For the most part, the actors did an adequate job in their roles.  I was relieved that Mahershala Ali did not use a fake African accent for his role.  Personally, I felt that he was rather stiff in saying his lines -- almost talking as if he was a robot of sorts. I kept waiting for the part in the movie that showed his acting abilities were worthy of a Golden Globe nomination -- which finally happened.  If you watch the Green Book movie, you will probably realize that Oscar-worthy moment of acting -- even if it lasted only a few minutes.

Viewpoint of Story in the Green Book Movie

The Green Book movie is told from the viewpoint of the driver, Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, who is a white male played by Viggo Mortensen. He was portrayed in the movie as being initially racist who eventually formed a friendship with the “Doc” Don Shirley character played by Mahershala Ali.  The movie was doable as told from Vallelonga’s angle, but I think more knowledge about the famous pianist could have been shared if it was told from the “Doc” Don Shirley’s character viewpoint -- especially since he was the one who mainly withstood and suffered from being treated in a derogatory, prejudiced manner because of his race.

Additionally, if the movie was told from “Doc” Don Shirley’s viewpoint, I think you would learn more about his background firsthand instead of in a roundabout way through discussions with his driver.  Even though the movie was mostly about “Doc” Don Shirley -- little was found out about him directly.  Instead, the audience learned more about his driver, the driver’s family etc. instead of the famous pianist.

Friendship between Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga and “Doc” Don Shirley’s Characters

In my opinion, I did not feel there were any true camaraderie between the two characters on the movie screen.  Sometimes, I can sense the camaraderie between characters -- which unfortunately, I did not while watching the two interact with each other on film.

For the most part, the driver was being chastised and treated almost as a child by the pianist.  Conversely, the driver acted somewhat as a savior for the pianist even going so far as instructing him not to go out alone in some areas without him.

As a movie audience member, I could tell that these were actors simply performing a job by doing this movie who would probably part ways after the movie is over.  In fact, Viggo Mortensen, who played the role of the driver, was heard while promoting the movie using an inappropriate racial slur. He apologized for saying it -- but only after he was found out and it was being publicized.  Unfortunately, I think this showed his true character since it is those times when an actor or anyone for that matter  say something that is unscripted where his or her real character comes through.

My Questions Relative to the Green Book Movie

Questions that came to mind as I watched the Green Book movie were: Spoiler alerts:  Why couldn’t the famous pianist travel with his other two band members? As a member of the band, wouldn’t “Doc” Don Shirley have been closer to them instead of the driver he hired?  If he hired the driver -- why did he eventually drive his own car during the movie? If he was so astute on using a Steinway piano during his performances, why did one scene show him playing on some other type of piano instead? Did the pawnshop couple as well as  “Doc” Don Shirley really show up for Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga’s family Christmas dinner, or were these scenes added to somehow pull the movie storylines together coherently. There are other questions as well, but I will stop here.

Assessment of the Green Book Movie

The above being said and asked, I think the movie was worth my wait in seeing it.  The Green Book movie accomplished its goal to show the discrimination and unfair treatment of the African American pianist.  Of course a few scenes may have been changed for dramatic effect and there may have been some character changes/consolidations as well.

The Green Book movie attempted to end on a somewhat upbeat, positive note given the dark, bleak scenarios shown during the movie.  Even though this is not a movie I would probably see again, I think it is worth at least a first look for those who want to take a glimpse of what happened during the life of “Doc” Don Shirley.

At the end of the day, the Green Book movie is after all just a movie.  It can serve as an impetus for one to do further research on the famous pianist to get a more realistic view of who he was as a person. In other words, If you want to learn more about “Doc” Don Shirley as well as his driver Frank “Tony Lip” Vallelonga --  the Green Book movie could serve as a passable starting point.

Rating of the Green Book Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Green Book movie 3 stars.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie Review by Ms. H

Disclaimer:  The views expressed here are mine alone and do not reflect those of allgames.com.

Introduction

I will cut to the chase and tell you what I thought about the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie.  It was simply a movie that you should skip and spend your time doing something else that will probably be a lot more enjoyable than watching this movie.  When I chose to watch this movie at the theater, I knew there would be plenty of Computer-Generated Images (CGI) which was not a problem. Unfortunately, among other things, there was not an interesting, cohesive, attention grabbing story to somewhat match the CGI graphics to keep your attention throughout the film.

Storyline of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald film is a science fiction movie where plenty of magic takes place, sometimes initiated by a character pointing a wand and oftentimes without seemingly anything used to prompt the magic. You will see characters disappearing into walls instead of walking through doors, moving from place to place by use of a rusty-looking bucket, arriving at their location through a piece of beat-up looking luggage and so forth.

There was also a lack of creativity in the magic being performed. For example, during the movie there were nylon clothes floating  around in the air -- which a character in the movie said was a summons from the leader to gather at a certain place.  This scene could have been made interesting by having different bursts of light shine from buildings or even from the air, or someone announcing this gathering to the people while riding one of the “fantastic beasts”, etc.

Another problem  with the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie was Identifying a solid storyline.  Spoiler Alert: When the movie starts, you may think it will be about a war or battle between the the wizards and the non-wizards.  However, such a battle did not take place. There were grandiose speeches made to the crowd led in some cases by Johnny Depp who played the part of Gellert Grindelwald but no out-right battles. Other storylines included one of the characters trying to locate his mother; and another scenario involved a misunderstanding between two characters relative to who is dating who and still another storyline is someone searching and ultimately finding their romantic interest.

Comic Relief in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie

If you see the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie, you probably will be able to spot the character who is trying his best to be humorous -- however, his humor did not register with the movie audience.  Even if he said a funny line or was placed in a laughable situation -- this would not have made a difference in the overall movie.  By not tying all the actions, characters into one major goal, this movie failed miserably with nowhere to go but down.

Acting Skills Displayed in the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie

I guess Eddie Redmayne who played the character of Newt Scamander can be considered one of the major if not the main actor -- even though there were other probably more well known actors such as Zoe Kravitz, who played the role of Leta LeStrange, Jude Law who played the part of Albus Dumbledore and Johnny Depp was one of the leaders.

In my opinion, Eddie Redmayne could use a few acting lessons to bring his acting skills up to par. During the majority of the move, he walked around with his eyes wide as if he was surprised and he appeared to not comprehend fully what was going on around him.   Regarding the other actors -- personally, I was not a fan of the Zoe Kravitz’s forced English accent. Additionally, I expected much more from Johnny Depp’s acting.

Assessment of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie

The above being said, all is not lost with the movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.   Spoiler Alert: I think one of the highlights was the CGI scene where one of the actors did a slow backward flip as she transformed into a snake.  Another positive was the camaraderie between two of the characters who made an oath not the fight against each other -- which they both kept. I also liked the diversity in this movie.

Another positive for me was I did not have to spend money to see it -- since I used a free movie credit. However, the negatives as I’ve discussed above far outweighed any positives.  To add to the negatives this movie is overly long and could have ended earlier by leaving out a few non-essential scenes. Instead, the movie dragged along with the endless foray of flashbacks, etc.

Unfortunately, I am unable to recommend you watch this movie in the movie theater, unless you want to see the snake transformation, or some animated CGI animals running around. Take my advice.  Look at the youtube video of the snake transformation. (Note: It looks better in the movies). I think you should save your time and money doing something that you enjoy.  If you are a fan of the Fantastic Beasts movies, then I highly recommend you wait to see  the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie when it goes to DVD or to one of the streaming services.

Rating of the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald movie 1 ½ stars.
