About C2E2

A little while ago I wrote about why the small cons have an advantage over the gigantic San Diego Comic Con. So it was in this spirit that went down to Chicago, IL for C2E2. The trip simply confirmed everything I said before.

The show floor itself is divided into three sections. The autograph area, where for a small fee you can get an autograph and a picture from one of your favorite supporting cast members.

The main floor, where you can buy just about anything comic book or fantasy related. Unlike the big cons there’s nothing new here, none of the big companies whose name you’d recognize have a booth. Even the independent publishers are rare and difficult to find. It’s literally a giant swap meet of nerdiness. With alcohol. Revolution Brewing, a local brewery, provided the event with a nice selection of beers on tap.

Then we have artists’ alley, where you can buy art prints or commission an original piece from the artists themselves.  The advantage of not having so many giant flashy promotional booths on the show floor is that it frees up more space for the artists with bigger names like Neal Adams, Peter Tomasi, and Dan Jurgens. But get there early because there will be a line and they can only take a limited number of commissions. Plus they tend to get a little testy when they realize they’re going to have to draw Superman over and over again all day for three days (don’t ever meet your heroes).

The other half of the con is the panels. Nothing really new here. But there aren’t any mega stars promoting the next summer blockbuster or upcoming show. The panels are where you can listen to discussions about what’s going on in the industry or even provide feedback to writers and artists about where the future of the major titles should go.

As you walk around the convention floor you’ll notice that this is where the fans go. You see it in the diversity of characters being cosplayed. While you’ll still see a variety of Deadpools, the Harley Quinns are at a minimum, and none of those women trying to sell you a picture or get you to subscribe to their Patreon.

C2E2 is a con for the true fans, I hope to see more of you out there next year. Tune in to the April 26 episode Fantastic Forum to hear more about my C2E2 adventures.

Who's Hyped for STRANGE ACADEMY ?

STRANGE ACADEMY will launch this March as a new ongoing series helmed by best-selling comic book veterans: Eisner Award-winning writer Skottie Young (Deadpool, Rocket Raccoon) and critically acclaimed artist Humberto Ramos (Amazing Spider-Man, Champions). The new series will bring together a whole new class of students from Earth, Weirdworld, Asgard, the Dark Dimension, and beyond to learn how to control their gifts in the Mystic Arts under Doctor Strange, Brother Voodoo, The Ancient One, Scarlet Witch, Magik, Hellstrom, and all of Marvel’s most iconic magicians. But with a new threat looming on the horizon, is it too late?

“What we’re really trying to do is tell those classic coming of age stories that we’ve seen in so many other properties or other projects out there in the world whether it be TV or film or novels or comics,” Young told the AP. “Whether it’s kids running around mazes or kids at a magic school or people running around trying to survive a post-apocalyptic landscape.”

“Over a year ago, I was driving Skottie down from the airport in Mexico, and out of the blue, he asked me what I wanted to do after working on Spider-Man,” said Ramos. “He began to pitch me on an incredible project for the rest of the weekend…and I’m excited to now say that project is STRANGE ACADEMY! Like all great stories, they all start with an idea…and this idea blew me away. We can’t share too much yet, but if you stick around, you’ll get to experience magic like you’ve never seen before in the Marvel Universe. Welcome to Strange Academy! Man, I love the first day of school!”

STRANGE ACADEMY will center on Emily Bright (a girl who discovered magical powers since birth), Doyle Dormammu (the illegitimate son of the Dark Dimension’s ruler), and their new classmates as mysteries begin to unfold not just for the students at the school, but for the entire Marvel Universe. With a new cast rooted in Marvel’s history and fan-favorite characters, this series will be the perfect introduction for both fans just diving into comics and for fans who have been following Marvel for years.

Set in the mystical backdrop of New Orleans, The Big Easy will play a pivotal role in STRANGE ACADEMY with its rich local culture and innate magic of the French Quarter, the Bayou, the Swamps, and more. To capture the essence of STRANGE ACADEMY, Young and Ramos conducted their research firsthand.

“There’s a nice history and folklore about magic and the mystic arts and the dark arts and things like that that kind of surround the mythos of New Orleans,” said Young. “Having just gone there myself for my 40th, I thought that would be a great place to set it.”

Exclusive! Ninja Turtles 2 Flop Puts Paramount in Panic Mode!

The dismal performance of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows has Paramount rethinking the future of the franchise. A source from inside the studio has reported just how drastic the reaction is.

The studio is reportedly going to fire the writing team currently working on the third movie in favor of a full on reboot. A reboot means all new director and all new design for the turtles. There is still a debate among the higher ups on whether to stay live action or go back to animated. There’s a debate over the profitability of big name actors and the tried and true model of targeting to kids.

It’ll be interesting to see if Michael Bay can work his Voodoo and convince the studio to give him another chance.

Awesome Con 2015 Raises the Bar

 Awesome ConAwesome Con

Introduction

In light of how great Awesome Con fared, the bar was raised for this year's convention. Awesome Con was held at the Washington Convention Center in Washington DC May 29 - 31, 2015.  Notwithstanind the long treks between the different exhibits and events, including the photo and autograph ops sessions, you may walk away from the convention feeling elated to have been a part of such an entertaining event.

Size and Scope

The size and scope of Awesome Con rival that of others that I recently attended, namely the Tidewater Comic Con. This year Awesome Con took over not only the main convention center building but the building across from L Street as well.  If you have not been to the Washington Convention Center lately, as a side treat you could admire the artistic displays including modern hanging sculptures such as a cluster of hanging bicycles as well as tables arranged in a large circlular design.

Cosplays

As probably expected, there appeared to be a bigger turnout of both shoppers, cosplayers and others on Saturday, the second day of the convention. There were signs posted to request a photograph before taking pictures of cosplayers.  The cosplayers, in my opinion were happy to have pictures taken, sometimes posing and doing double duty if someone else approached wanting a picture also.  In fact, even though I did not purposely seek out photographs for myself, I was happy when I was asked for a picture -- which I gladly obliged.

Regarding the mix of cosplayers versus shoppers -- I noticed the majority of attendees seemed to be focused on shopping or even browsing rather than cosplays.  A visual survey of the attendees -- which was many -- showed quite a few were not dressed up as cosplayers.  However, the ones who took the time to cosplay as their favorite comic book, video game or other characters, did, in my opinion, an amazing job. Some were decked out in lots of clothing while cosplaying while others wore no more than a lion's cloth and briefs with body artfully decorated with yellow paint and black lined designs. Some cosplayers depicted characters in block buster franchises such as Star Trek, Stars Wars, Dr. Who and others.

Make-up of Awesome Con

There was tables and booths set up gearing toward the comic book industry including comic books, graphic novels, with some sold at relative low prices. On Friday night, I made a mental note to return to the comic book table that had impressive large discounts on comic books and other items.  However, when I returned to the booth the next day, it was no where to be found.  Lesson learned is when at large conventions with schedules and exhibits sometimes changing constantly, it is best to purchase an item right then and there, unless you are absolutely sure the booth will be there on another day.

Awesome Con Comic Book DealsAwesome Con Comic Book Deals

In addition to special guests including authors, there were also comic book graphics artists displaying their wares as well.  While at Awesome Con on Friday and Saturday, I interviewed a few graphics artists including Josh Anderson and Sean Von Gorman. I did not attend Sunday's event; however, I'm sure those who did had lots of fun.

Photo and Autograph Ops

Even though there were both autograph as well as photo ops, I will focus on how photo ops were handled at Awesome Con.  There were lots of big names at the photo ops sessions where for a fee you could get your picture taken with a well-known celebrity such as William Shatner, George Takei and others as listed on the Awesome Con website and in the program book.  Because of the popularity of some celebrities, long lines were to be expected.  Based on my experience of leaving a line and returning just a few minutes later to find out my chosen celebrity had already leflt, here is my suggestion.  To ensure everyone there gets the photo ops they want and paid for -- there should be an announcement on the loudspeaker of when the last person or close to when the last person is in line to take photo ops.  That way, there would be less of a chance for a photo op to be missed. It was a nice touch to have someone using a bullhorn to welcome attendees to Awesome Con; however, I think announcing when a photo op is getting ready to end would be beneficial to the attendees as well.

The above being said, the swapping of my celebrity choice for a photo op to Star Trek's George Takei from William Shatner was handled smoothly, where I also received a digital picture as well due to the price differences of the photo ops.

Awesome Con CosplayAwesome Con Cosplay

Video Gaming

What would Awesome Con be like without video games? Glady, I did not have to find out because there were video gaming at Awesome Con 2015. On the first floor of the main convention area, large rooms were set aside dedicated to not only console gaming but other types of gaming as well.  I visited the 24 hour console video gaming room sessions which displayed two large video game screens, one showing a dancing video game, and the other showing a fighting video game.  On the tables were a myriad of video gaming consoles including of course the Play Station 4 and the Xbox One along with the video games.  This darkened room provided a respite from the hustle and bustle of the exhibit halls which were packed with people on Saturday.  Everyone was cordial and shared the use of the video gaming consoles. An added plus was there was adequate seating in the video gaming spaces, which seemed to be sparse in some other areas in the large, main convention area.

Wrap-Up

If Awesome Con sounds like one you would like to attend, it is never too early to plan ahead.  The next Awesome Con is scheduled for June 3-5, 2016 at the same location, Washington Convention Center.  Improvements were made from the previous Awesome Con which included a smoother process for the photo ops sessions and expanding to use another building for the convention.  If these improvements and raising the bar continues, the next convention will provide even more enjoyable experiences.  I for one, can't wait to see what other awesome experiences are in store when Awesome Con returns.

People Should Go To Wonder-Con

More people should be going to any and all of the little “baby-cons” across the country. I’ve made this statement to as many people as would listen. Partially in the hope of reducing the giant crowds at the real Comic-Con in San Diego, but also because these little cons are what SDCC used to be.

Each year I make the trip down to San Diego I see more and more of the comics being swallowed up by whatever the latest upcoming blockbuster needs to advertise that year. It’s gotten to that point that more and more people are referring to it as “Pop-Con”. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I completely understand the need for the big spectacle. Something to shine a spotlight onto oncoming awesomeness to as many people as possible and keep up the quality of the products we enjoy. But there comes a point where it becomes way too big to truly be enjoyed. Are you really getting the Con experience waiting in a line for a day and a half to get into a 20 minute panel?

This is where an event like Wonder-Con becomes a necessity. A throwback to the early days where you stop to take a picture of a cosplayer without worrying about the thousand people traffic jam behind you. Just being able to walk from booth to booth without people bumping into you, or worse, nearly crushing you as a mass of bodies rushes to where the Game of Thrones guy was just spotted. Even the prices on comics are better (if you’re into that sort of thing). The panels are smaller but you can show up within 10 minutes and still get in. There are far less exclusive items at these smaller cons but a lot of the cool show exclusive everyone is going crazy for during SDCC end up on Ebay the next day anyway.

Every year a billion people descend into SDCC looking for the Comic-Con experience. I say that experience has moved on to Wonder-Con, Kamikaze, C2E2, etc. Go there while you still can.

Same Supergirl, new channel

The rumors are now true. Supergirl is officially moving to the CW. This could mean absolutely nothing more than having to change the settings on your DVR. Unless they actually change the writing team or add some of the people from the other DC/CW shows i don't foresee any difference from what we have now. You'll either still hate it or still love it.

Personally I'm a little bit optimistic after the success of the crossover with the Flash. I'm hopping for the next season of each show to build up to some sort of crisis that unifies the dimensions and brings the Supergirl cast into the current DC televerse.

What do you think about the possibility of the house of EL joining the current roster of superfriends?

Pray for Cooke

I just got the shittiest news today via Darwin Cooke's  Blog. The artist of my favorite batman story is receivng palliative care following a battle with aggressive cancer. Im not gonna list any of his credits in hopes that I'll do it in his eulogy many years from now. For now let's send good vibes his way.

Apparently everybody is thwipping themselves over the latest leak for Spider-Man far from home. It features a dark costumed Spider-Man, so of course everyone who sees it, be they news sites or instagram meme makers, make the single bound leap to Spider-Man’s stealth suit from Dan Slott’s run on the character’s comic adventure. If you were to ask your humble white male cis blogger, I’d tell you that those people are a bunch of morons. That suit could be anything. It could be for all I know the armored suit from the 90’s all you see is a dark shape...

There has been a lot of discussion about the latest Marvel/Netflix collaboration “Iron Fist”. I was very worried when every review I read about the show said almost the exact same horrible things. While I normally prefer to read a review of the entire series, I also believe that 6 episodes (almost half the series) is more than enough time to establish your characters and hook in the viewer. When time finally arrived for me to watch it for myself, I cracked open a bottle of whiskey to help me get through the difficult chore ahead of me. Five episodes...
