Detective Pikachu Movie Casts Ryan Reynolds To Play Yellow Pokemon

  • Written by Gamespot

In what may be the most surprising news in some time, the movie adaptation of Detective Pikachu has found a star and it's none other than Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. The actor has signed on to appear as the little yellow Pokemon in the film, which is being directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps).

The new comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says the movie will follow a teen as he teams with Detective Pikachu and a "sassy journalist" named Lucy to find his missing father. The teen will be played by The Get Down star Justice Smith, who also appears in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Katheryn Newton (Big Little Lies) plays the journalist.

It was previously reported that in addition to Reynolds, the film's producers were looking at Hugh Jackman, Dwayne Johnson, and Mark Wahlberg to take on the titular role. Based on the Japanese video game Great Detective Pikachu, the movie is being written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

There is no release date for Detective Pikachu yet. Pokemon fans who can't wait are in luck, though. Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were recently released. Reynolds returns to the big screen in Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018.
