Introduction to Zombieland: Double Tap Movie Review by Ms. H

I think we all know that a fair amount of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) is used in movies.  Think of those slow motion shots or any movie dealing with monsters, dinosaurs and others, and you expect to see this. However, when I watched Zombieland: Double Tap, I did not expect the large display of notices to display on the movie screen.

In Zombieland: Double Tap movie, you will see different rules and other messages displayed in various type graphics on the screen along with whatever else is going on in the movie. What did I think of this, and would I recommend you watch Zombieland: Double Tap? Check out my movie review to find out.

The Graphic Notices on the Screen in the Zombieland: Double Tap Movie

If you watch Zombieland, throughout the movie you will see certain rules, etc. not only voiced, but large graphic displays on the screen.  In my opinion, this took away from what was happening in the film and made the movie seem more like a powerpoint or video footage presentation instead of a movie.  To be fair, the displays were not continuous, so you saw real life acting without the displays. However, the appearances of these pop-up notices took away from giving the film a movie atmosphere.

Nothing Scary about the Zombieland: Double Tap Movie

Last time I checked, zombies are scary creatures and are to be feared. I did not see any of this displayed by the actors in this movie. Maybe it was because of the period of time, or because they expected to see these creatures -- but the film was underwhelming to me in the way of the scare focus.

Little known fact about Zombieland: Double Tap:  The cast was already selected for this sequel movie prior to the film being written. In fact, the project was on hold until the writers were free to write for the movie.

Characters Depictions in the Zombieland: Double Tap Movie

The more I watched Zombieland,  the more I viewed it as a disjointed comedy instead of a well put together movie. That being said, one of the characters in the movie seemed straight out of the Legally Blonde movie franchise where a female seemed to have no idea of what was going on, and spoke and acted as such.  Maybe this was seen as a comic relief but I think this character and an annoyance was my least favorite of the cast.

Predictability of the Zombieland: Double Tap Movie

Zombieland: Double Tap had highly predictable sequences in the movie. Spoiler alert:  Whenever there was some sort of danger, you knew the main characters were going to get out ok. There was an incident where the writers led you to believe that one of the characters was destroyed, but in the end, you find out that nothing really happens to her.

Grossness Displayed in the Zombieland: Double Tap Movie

Along with the unending profanity voiced by Woody Harrelson and a few others, there were many grotesque scenes where I had to turn my head away from the screen.  In fact, I had to do this quite a few times given the number of times someone was shown vomiting, etc. in the movie. Additionally, there is a really graphic scene showing the destruction of a Zombie’s head and face that you may want to look away from if you see this movie.

Diversity in Zombieland: Double Tap

This movie gets a passing score regarding having Rosario Dawson in the film; however, her appearance alone was not enough to save the movie.

Assessment of Zombieland: Double Tap

With Halloween being only a few days away, I planned to see this movie long before it was released.  Was it a disappointment to me? I would have to answer a resounding “Yes.” Even with big stars in the movie such as Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Luke WIlson, and others -- the movie, to me, was a dud. There is a scene with Bill Murray after the credits roll, but I don’t think it’s worth your time hanging around to watch it.

Rating of Zombieland: Double Tap

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Zombieland: Double Tap 1/ ¾ stars.

Is Black and Blue a Training Day Movie Clone? Black and Blue Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to the Black and Blue Movie Review by Ms. H

I saw the trailer for the Black and Blue movie and made a mental note to watch this film once it was released. The Black and Blue movie stars an African American female actor who I wanted to support since these type movies are few and far between. Did my support of the Black and Blue movie pan out for me or was the movie a waste of my time?  Check out my movie review of Black and Blue to find out.

Training Day and Black and Blue Movie Similarities

As you watch the Black and Blue movie, you may see a few similarities with Training Day, the movie starring  the academy award winning actor Denzel Washington. Without a doubt, Denzel Washington is a much experienced, as well as a better and skilled actor than the star of this movie, Naomie Harris. However there are specific scenes in the movie Black and Blue which may cause you to think of the Training Day film. I will not divulge them here, but there are at least two (maybe more) similarities between events in these two movies that I noticed.

Plot of the Black and Blue Movie

Simply put, the plot of the Black and Blue film centers around the plight of a police officer’s circumstance when she witnesses an event that ultimately formed the basis for the storyline of the movie. There are a few subplots thrown in, but the major plot centers around this situation.

Acting Skills Displayed in the Black and Blue Movie

In my opinion, the acting skills of the actors in the Black and Blue film were adequate for the movie. Prior to watching this film, I inadvertently came across an article online that lauded Tyrese Gibson on his acting skills in the Black and Blue movie.

The above being said, I watched the movie at the theater with an open mind, and noticed that even though Tyrese Gibson had less screen time than the star, Naomie Harris, he seemed to be a more natural actor. In other words, there was no under or over-acting on his part. I think he performed in a way that drew you into what was going on in the movie.

Suspense in the Black and Blue Movie

I think for the most part, the background music sets the tone for this movie in addition to the storyline. When there were lots of action, the momentum of the music changed to reflect this.  Additionally, even though Black and Blue is in no way a horror movie, sometimes the suspense in the movie is so strong, especially towards the beginning of the movie, it may cause you to jump in your seat.  Yes.. there are a few jump scares in the movie. On the other hand, the amount of drama presented in the movie balanced the action and suspense.

Similarities of the Black and Blue Movie to the Training Day Movie

As I alluded to earlier, due to the outstanding acting skills of Denzel Washington in the movie Training Day, there is no way, in my opinion, to compare these two movies fairly.  However, there are similarities in some scenes in this movie that correlates to Training Day. Since the stories are distinctly different, I would say that Black and Blue is not a clone of Training Day.  However, I believe the writer took creative license to show scenes that were remotely based on the Training Day movie.

Assessment of Black and Blue Movie

The mix of action, adventure, drama and suspense proved to be an entertaining combination in the Black and Blue movie for me and may be for you as well. On the flip side, I think the movie art staff were lenient in showing damage to the actors. Additionally, I was not a fan of the violence. However, the most important aspect of this movie was the delivery of a story that sort of grabs your attention and in some instances may have you sitting on the edge of your seat.

Rating of the Black and Blue Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Black and Blue movie 4 stars.

Did Disney’s Big Bucks Bring Huge Results for Maleficent? Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Review by Ms. H

Introduction to Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie Review by Ms. H

As you know, Disney has lots of money and can more than afford to give us -- the movie audience -- a big bang for our bucks in movie entertainment value. Just how did Disney fare in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil starring Angelina Jolie, Michelle Pfeiffer and others? Check out my movie review to find out.

High Expectations for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie

Personally, Disney has no excuses when it comes to providing high quality content with well-known film people. Angelina Jolie probably cost Disney a pretty penny to rehash her role as Maleficent. More than likely, they saved a bit on the computer theatrics and graphics, but to get Angelina Jolie to play this part was, I'm sure, a large part of the budget.

As I sat down at the movies to watch Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, my expectations were high -- even though the number of people in the movie theater was minimal with lots of empty seats. I reasoned that the movie has been out for awhile and maybe people have already seen it. Or were there empty seats for other low interest and excitement levels?

Plot of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil evolved around the idea of bringing two kingdoms together by way of marriage.  Of course there were some devious subplots that probably undermined this happening [at first], but the coming together of these two kingdoms in peace was the main focus of the movie. Couple with that the warring factions of humans against the bird-like people known as Moors--you would think this would make for an attention-grabbing movie. However and it’s unfortunate that this movie did not quite deliver on entertainment value for me.

Little Known Fact about Maleficent: Mistress of Evil: Interesting words spoken by Angelina Jolie during the movie --  "Love doesn't always end well..."... Go figure.

Warring Factions in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

The source of conflict in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was the humans did not get along with the Moors.  In fact, the Moors were forced to live underground in order to protect themselves from the humans. What was the impetus to bring them from underground to start a war?  The writer/director want you to believe it was the treacherous Queen played by Michelle Pfeiffer who caused this to happen by performing unscrupulous acts. I found this difficult to believe, even if it is a made-up story.

Lots of Characters in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

If you watch Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, hopefully you will be able to follow the story of the characters, because there are lots of them. To make matters worse, these are characters you probably do not care much for.

I think Disney missed an opportunity to make the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie a gigantic hit by introducing so many characters and not concentrating on the conflict between the Queen played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Maleficent played by Angelina Jolie.

Spoiler alert:  There is a brief altercation between the two, but it was very low-key.

Weak Points in the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie

I think the bride-to-be as well as the groom-to-be could have been stronger characters.  They both seemed timid in their roles. On the flip side, both Michelle Pfeiffer and Angelina Jolie could have been stronger in theirs.

As you watch Maleifcent: Mistress of Evil -- be prepared to see some strange transformations in the film, one of which was a surprise for me while the other was not.  This transformtion also seemed amateurish. You will know what I’m talking about if you see the movie Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Spoiler alert: Interesting enough, a lead male character is ultimately destroyed in the film, while, and as expected Maleficent was able to survive quite a bit of damage.

You will notice a character who may remind you of Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. He probably could have been omitted from this film, because basically all he did was walk around without any dialogue.

Strong Points in the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie

Computer-Generated Graphics (CGI) was used well and in some parts of the movie complemented the orchestra background music.

There are splashes of action in the movie including battle scenes which may keep your interest.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is rated PG so just about anyone can see it.

Assessment of the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie

Unfortunately, the weak points outnumber the strong ones in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.  However, you may enjoy seeing Angelina Jolie flying as Maleficent. In fact, I believe, in one of the scenes, she did a (CGI) flip in the air, before flying to her destination.

The storyline could have emphasized more the conflict between the two lead women characters as I mentioned earlier.  Also with the deep pockets that Disney has, I think they could have come up with a block-buster, jaw-dropping movie more so than the one they released.

The above being said, you may want to check this movie out for yourself and come to your own conclusions, especially if you are a Disney fan and like these type movies.

Rating of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie

Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Movie 2 stars.
