Introduction to Close - A Netflix Movie Review
I happened upon the Close movie as I was browsing Netflix the other day. I noticed the star of this movie, Noomi Rapace also starred in a film I reviewed recently -- Unlocked. Since I enjoyed the Unlocked movie, I decided to watch the Netflix film Close. How did the movie Close measure up to Unlocked? Check out my movie review to find out.
Synopsis of the Close Movie
The Close movie is about a wealthy heiress being kidnapped and the bodyguard hired to protect her. To throw a wrench in the plot, an enemy to the heiress is also her supposedly evil stepmother who, of course, feels as if she should have been the rightful heir.
One of the takeaways from the movie Close is what happens when greed sometimes seemingly trump's family relationships. Speaking of family relationships, the writer decided to add another family storyline dealing with the estranged adopted daughter of the character played by Noomi Rapace.
The Close Movie's Tie in to the Casablanca Film
You may have noticed I mentioned “Casablanca Kidnapping” in the title of my movie review. The movie Close happened or had a movie setting near Casablanca which reminded me of the movie classic, Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Remember Humphrey Bogart’s famous words, “Play it Again Sam?" To be clear, there was no Sam, the piano player in the movie. That being said, the main character of the movie’s first name is Sam, played by the star Noomi Rapace. These tie-ins are probably coincidental, but I thought it was interesting and I would mention them in my movie review of Close.
Action Scenes in the Close Movie
I found the action scenes in the movie to be attention-grabbing - some of which I had not seen the likes of before. The action happened not only on land, but also deep in the ocean, with schools of fish swimming near by. In my opinion, this was creative on the part of the director, even though I was not a fan of the violence.
Stars of the Close Movie
If you watch the Close Netflix movie, you may notice that at first the heiress is depicted as a partying socialite so to speak who probably seemed to be irresponsible. But as the movie progresses, she seems to mature some almost to the point where she could have been the action star instead of Noomi Rapace’s character. When I watched these parts of the movie, I even thought of her as either a sidekick or maybe a partner to the star, even though she was the one being protected by Noomi Rapace’s character.
Little Known Fact: Kidnapped person’s words paraphrased in the presence of the rescuer.: “Ahhhhh, my father used my birthday as the password to the security system.
Kidnapper rescuer later trying to get into the system. “Now what was that password?” -- Then proceeds to initially enter random numbers. Go figure.
Assessment of the Close Movie
If I compared the Close movie to Unlocked, I think Unlocked would score a few points higher. This is mainly due to the fact that I did not notice any scenes that seemed out of place in the Unlocked film.
By contrast, I noticed at least two inconsistent scenarios in the Close movie: (1) The adopted daughter story that seemed to be a last minute addition to the movie and Spoiler Alert: (2) The about face of the stepmother’s actions toward the stepdaughter heiress towards the end of the movie. You will know what I’m referring to if you watch this film.
However, to the movie’s credit -- there were some impressive action scenes and even more amazing, they were done by Noomi Rapace, or maybe her stunt double. I also liked the subtle Casablanca inferences relative to the movie’s location and the main character’s name -- Sam.
Rating of the Close Movie
Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate the Close Netflix movie 4 stars.
