Introduction to the 21 Bridges Movie Review by Ms. H
21 Bridges is a film I made a mental note to see once it was released at the movie theaters. The movie trailer seemed interesting and there were lots of action in the film. Of note is the movie starred Chadwick Boseman who played the Black Panther in the Marvel movie. Would his notoriety of playing the Black Panther role cross over to spell success for his other films -- namely 21 Bridges? Check out my movie review to find out.
Plot of the 21 Bridges Movie
The plot is a familiar one with cops and robbers-villains. The robbery indirectly involved money, but primarily centered around the acquirement of drugs as well as the consequences some police officers faced who interfered with the heist.
Characterizations of Actors in the 21 Bridges Movie
The writers and director did a good job of telling both sides of the story. In other words, even though the storyline leaned largely toward Chadwick Boseman's character who played the detective, Andre Davis, the audience saw a glimpse of the bad guys personas and predicaments as well. Spoiler Alert: I believe this was a plus for the movie especially since one of the villains seemed to be leaning towards doing the right thing.
Acting Abilities Displayed in the 21 Bridges Movie
My critique will be on the two main actors -- Chadwick Boseman and J.K. Simmons. When Chadwick Boseman played the role of the Black Panther, his acting facial expressions were mainly hidden by the full face mask that he wore sometimes. However, in the 21 Bridges movie, you saw Chadwick Boseman’s acting ability up front and personal without a mask.
To make a long story short, his acting abilities were fine, except he seemed to have one signature look when he was concerned or seemed to be concentrating deeply on something. In other words, some of his acting seemed to me to have a sameness quality about them. On the other hand, while J.K. Simmons as the cop, Captain Matt McKenna did not exhibit these traits. The minus was I’ve seen him on insurance commercials on TV, and could not see any realism in him acting the part of a cop -- even though of course many actors play various parts during their careers.
Unrealistic Scenarios in the 21 Bridges Movie
Several actions happened that probably would not happen in real life in this movie. Spoiler Alert: For example, during the 21 Bridges movie, the female police officer and mother of one told Chadwick Boseman’s character to “take a shot” when she was being physically held hostage -- a move that could have possibly destroyed her. There may have been others as well, which, of course can be expected in a movie.
Predictability of the 21 Bridges Movie
Movies showing corrupt policemen are not new, so all during the film you may suspect that something wasn’t quite right during the drug bust and the ensuing actions that happened afterwards. Watching the movie, it was just a matter of how the corruption would finally be unveiled. Therefore the suspense in 21 Bridges is limited to why was the movie was named 21 Bridges as well as when the corrupt police officers would be revealed and how.
Assessment of the 21 Bridges Movie
To answer the question if the “Black Panther” saved the movie 21 Bridges, my response is there was really no correlation between the two characters or the movies. Chadwick Boseman starring as the Black Panther may have enticed people to see the 21 Bridges movies; however, the main factor to save this movie would be the storyline.
The saving grace to the 21 Bridges movies is the numeroius action scenes. That being said, I describe 21 Bridges as a “so-so” movie, so if you see the movie, it’s fine, and if you do not see the movie, that’s fine also.
Rating of the 21 Bridges Movie
Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate 21 Bridges 3 stars.
