Introduction to Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie Review by Ms. H
I think there is an art to making movie trailers or previews in such a way that you want to rush out and see the movie as soon as it is released. It seems that the possible exciting plot of the movie Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare as shown in the previews was hyped up quite a bit. I was anticipating seeing a movie with an intriguing plot as well as an ingenious way to solve a puzzle. I was curious as to how this truth or dare game could be solved and ultimately ended. However, unfortunately, I was setting myself up for a huge disappointment when I finally saw the movie.
Plot of Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
You are probably familiar with the game truth or dare. It’s basically, in my opinion, a bluffing game where the person has to tell the truth about something or take on a dare -- which sometimes are not actions the person really wants to take. The movie involves a close-knit group of college kids who went on a trip to Mexico together. Before long, strange events starts to happen -- which all resulted from them playing the game truth or dare.
Acting Skills of Actors in Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
Most of the actors did an adequate, but not outstanding job in their roles. I think the best actors in the cast were Lucy Hale who played Olivia and Violett Beane who played the part of Markie. The worst actors in the cast were Aurora Perrineau who played the part of Giselle who was hiding out due to a crime she committed. Others whose acting skills need improvement are the actors who played the parts of Tom and Brad Chang. That being said, the acting skills of most of the actors matched the artfulness of the movie -- which was practically nonexistent. In other words, better actors would not have improved on the entertainment value of this movie.
Truth or Dare Consequences in Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
Let’s start with the way the dares affected the actors. From the movie previews, you may get the impression that each time someone takes a dare a major incident happens that ultimately destroys the person. This was not always the case with the movie. A few met drastic consequences while others did not. For example, the actress who played Olivia was one of the main players; therefore, nothing really bad happens to her outside her hand getting damaged. Without going into details, some of the dares bordered on being silly and a waste of time.
Realisms in Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
Certain unrealistic actions in the movie may stand out to you. For example, you may wonder how Olivia can go to the hospital for an injury and her parents do not show up or call. In fact, looks like the movie made a point of not having parents around except for a few. Instead, the group banded together to try to figure out what was happening in this truth or dare game, including facing whatever resulted from them doing so.
Horror in Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
This movie is categorized as a horror film, but if you see this movie, do not expect to get scared or frightened. The writer/director tried to make this film scary with the voices, images, etc. but did not succeed. There are a few jump scares at the beginning of the movie that were not palpable, such as a sudden loud noise that is heard only to find out that it was someone knocking on the door before entering a room. The other attempts at being a scary movie are not worth mentioning.
Assessment of Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
This movie does not in any way compare to “A Quiet Place” or even “Get Out.” Suspense was lacking in Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare. Additionally, it looked as if the writer/director tried to come up with scenarios that were not in any way, shape or form scary. On the plus side -- For the most part, the gross parts of the movie were hidden, so you had to imagine the actions taken. I give the film kudos for hiding from view what could have been gruesome scenes.
This movie had potential to add suspense and a creative way to bring this “Truth or Dare” movie to a higher level of entertainment. Unfortunately, I think the writer/director missed the mark on both counts with Blumhouses Truth or Dare.
Rating of Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare Movie
Based on a rating of 1 star to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate Blumhouses Truth or Dare Movie 1 ¼ stars.
