Introduction: The actors who have played the role of Spider-Man are many. The latest actor to dun Spider-Man duds is Tom Sullivan. During my movie review, I will share with you how Tom Sullivan fared as the latest friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Also the appearance of a prominent actor that is one of my favorites surprised me by having quite a major part in this movie. That actor is none other than Michael Keaton who at one time played Batman, and who received accolades and awards for his portrayal of Birdman. Since Michael Keaton was in this movie, I was ready to sit back, relax and enjoy Spider-Man: Homecoming; however, I had mixed feelings after this movie was over. Check out my review to find out why.
Actors in Spider-Man: Homecoming
I believe lots of action scenes and a variety of adventures in the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie almost masked the fact that, unfortunately Tom Sullivan did not make an impression with me as Spider-Man. First of all, he did not sound as I expected Spider-Man to sound, even if he is playing the role of a teenager. It seemed to me that everything he said sounded like he was super hyped and reminded me -- not of Spider-Man, but the teacher who played opposite Ice Cube in the comedy movie Fight. Additionally, I got the impression he was simply moving through the movie -- not really acting in it.
Laura Harrier played Spider-Man’s girlfriend and for what it’s worth, she could have been just a random girl in the movie due to the lack of chemistry between the two. As if that was not bad enough, there was one point in the movie where he had to make a choice to stay at her party or to run off and fight against the enemy. Of course, we know which choice he made. To me, the matchup of Laura Harrier and Tom Sullivan was a total mismatch (pun intended).
Fortunately, Michael Keaton’s character helped save the movie. Even though he plays a bad guy, I believe his acting abilities were up to par in Spider-Man: Homecoming. In an interesting twist of events, Michael Keaton as mentioned above played Birdman in the movie by the same name, and in the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie, he also played a flying creature. I think the writer and director did a good job showing how his character originated. As I mentioned earlier, Michael Keaton plays a bad guy, but seeing how his character evolved, helped with the overall story-line.
Just in case you are wondering, Spider-Man: Homecoming movie does not show how Spider-Man got his powers from a radioactive spider. Instead, the story starts with him already having powers. Regarding the other characters -- Robert Downey as Iron Man in Spider-Man Homecoming was uneventful for me as well as the actor who played Spider-Man’s best friend.
Zendaya had a small part in the movie; however, she was not convincing to me in playing a character who wanted to be friends with Spider-Man. In fact, her character was another fail in the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie and to be blunt -- the movie could have been made without her.
Action in Spider-Man: Homecoming
The action scenes were passable and not mind boggling. There were no gigantic explosions or catastrophic events that made an impression with me. In other words, Spider-Man: Homecoming is an action movie, but not to the extinct that wowed me. Speaking of action scenes, I felt sorry for the teenage Spider-Man when he and the Vulture (Michael Keaton’s character) got into a physical altercation. When the Vulture was throwing punches at Spider-Man, the match up did not seem fair, especially with Spider-Man being so small compared to the Vulture.
Twists and Turns in Spider-Man: Homecoming
There was one major twist or surprise in the movie which I will not divulge here. If you see the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie, you will witness one of the most creative twists that I have seen in a movie in a long time. In fact, it was that twist in the movie that formed the basis for me to give the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie a higher rating than I anticipated.
Assessment of Spider-Man: Homecoming
This is by far not the best Spider-Man movie I’ve seen, especially since I was not impressed with Tom Sullivan playing the lead role. This movie had all the features to make it a blockbuster, such as good plot, a believable villain, as well as lots of action scenes. However, even though Spider-Man: Homecoming story was told from a different angle this time, I think they could have picked a better choice for his romantic interest as well as for Spider-Man himself. My mixed feelings about Spider-Man: Homecoming was that after it was over, I could not say in all honesty that I had just seen a really good movie. Spider-Man movie was routine with him battling a villain - nothing really spectacular or unique.
Rating of Spider-Man: Homecoming
Based on a rating of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best, I rate Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 ½ stars.
