Introduction to The Circle - A Ms. H Movie Review
After seeing The Circle, I was surprised Oscar winning actor Tom Hanks appeared in such a movie. I was under the impression The Circle would be similar to other Tom Hanks' films including Forrest Gump, Castaway, Sully, and many other high caliber, high quality-type movies. Looks like Tom Hanks is copying Bruce Willis by commanding maybe a large salary to appear in a movie for a short time or to lend his name to it, regardless of the low qualiy of these movies. To be clear, The Circle is nowhere near Oscar status. However, I’m getting ahead of myself...read on for my movie review.
The Plot of The Circle
Similar to the words policemen say at the scene of an accident when rubber-neckers are straining, trying to see what's going on - I would say "Move along people...nothing to see here” to describe the plot of The Circle. I don't know whose idea it was to have such an amateurish movie on the big screen. When I last checked, the year is 2017 and social media in all of its forms has been around for some time now. It is unbelievable the plot of the Circle centers around someone agreeing to be watched or to be “transparent” as it is called in this movie - even if the time frame is 24 hours -- which by the way, is not new.
Additionally, I don't think there were any creativity or originality in the plot of The Circle. There was no drama, no suspense, and really nothing that kept my interest. Even the ending was a big disappointment. Spoiler Alert: The young tech worker (Emma Watson) who miraculously moved up in the company in a matter of days to headline big conferences supposedly did something totally unexpected when she revealed that the two owners, including Tom Hanks, would also go transparent. The camera panned closely to Tom Hanks' face when she made this surprise announcement and the look he gave was expressionless. It was like he was saying, "Who would want to watch me 24 hours a day?"
Ambiguous Character in The Circle
I’m calling the girl who showed Emma Watson’s character the ropes of this job ambiguous because it is not clear what her role is. At first she is happy and overjoyed to be showing Emma Watson’s character the ins and outs of her new job, and the next instance when Emma Watson’s character became “successful” this character stopped looking her best and started to look haggard, and seemed upset a lot. Was she jealous of Emma Watson’s character? I'm not absolutely sure because the next thing you know, she no longer works for The Circle; she's back in her home country of Scotland looking normal and talking friendly to Emma Watson’s character. The jealousy segment could have been left off completely because it did not add to the micro-thin storyline.
Star Wars Actor in The Circle
Believe it or not, John Boyega who was introduced to the world from the record breaking The Force Awakens Star Wars saga is in The Circle. Maybe he thought since Tom Hanks was in the movie, it could not be all that bad. Boy was he wrong. In fact, his character could have been eliminated as well because he gave the impression that he invented the inner workings of The Circle but did not want it to be used the way that it was. So why didn’t he do something about it? On a positive note, the solace in his acting career is any movie he does after this has to be a step up.
Assessment of The Circle
A positive in The Circle was the spacious layout of Emmar Watson's character's workplace. Also the movie was rated PG-13, so there was no profanity, bloodiness, gruesomeness, etc. That’s it. Unfortunately, this movie did not inform, entertain, or otherwise give anyone a reason to go to the movies to watch it or even to see it when it goes to DVD. I saw The Cirlcle without knowing exactly what it was all about. The good news, is I stayed through the entire movie and did not leave before it was over, unlike my actions when I saw another bad movie (The Shack) -- so I guess this would be another plus for The Circle.
Rating of The Circle
Based on a rating of 1 to 5 stars with 5 stars being the highest, I rate The Circle 1 star.
