Introduction to Fist Fight - A Ms. H Movie Review
It’s been awhile since I saw Fist Fight in the movie theater; however, I remember the storyline clearly. Fist Fight is obviously a comedy but in some cases, I think the writer and director took the comedy too far in the wrong direction when they tried to make people laugh. Was Fist Fight a funny movie? Check out my movie review below to find out.
Premise of Fist Fight
True to the title of the movie, Fist Fight is about a physical fight or altercation between two teachers. I believe the storyline is all in fun because this is probably not likely to happen, especially on school grounds. However, to follow along the premise of the movie, the plot seems to be geared toward a certain movie audience that enjoys these types movies. Obviously, this film is not to be taken seriously by any means. In fact the picture of a teacher wielding a baseball bat as a weapon in school clinches that fact that Fist Fight is to be viewed from a comedic view -- or as a way to get laughs.
Fist Fight Throwback Movie
Fist fight reminded me of some movies that went south when trying desperately to be funny. This was done a lot in comedy movies in the late 90’s and early 2000’s -- hence the description of "throwback." Fist Fight gave me the vibes of Mall Rats and other similar type movies of this genre. A disturbing component to me was the emphasis on illegal drugs, of course, which is now legal in some states, but not in the state where the movie was set.
I believe it was a plus for the Fist Fight movie to be restricted to adults, not only due to the illegal drugs and other inappropriate subjects, but based on the reason for the film itself. Who would think that two men would result to fist fighting at school to try to resolve an issue? All kinds of wrong messages were conveyed in this movie, so it was prudent for Fist Fight to be rated R and hopefully not available for viewing by moviegoers under 17 years of age. That being said, it was interesting to me when there was actually a moment of suspense in Fist Fight.
Spoiler alert: When both Charlie Day and Ice Cube were sitting in front of the principal waiting to be fired -- there was a short time when the question of would he or wouldn’t he when Charlie Day’s character was in a posture to reveal who actually violently destroyed school property. As I mentioned before, they both faced the possibility of losing their jobs. If you’ve seen Fist Fight, Charlie Day's backstory was that he needed his job because of his family etc., so he in essence told the truth about the other teacher. Of course, since he knew Ice Cube would retaliate in some way, it was sort of interesting to see which route he would take.
Funny Parts in Fist Fight
If you felt uncomfortable while watching certain parts of Fist Fight, I don’t think that would be a basis to categorize this movie as being funny. There were quite a few scenes that fit the “uncomfortable” category including one with a little girl singing a raunchy song for a school contest. However, there were a few funny parts, including Charlie Day running unexpectedly into his wife and daughter while he was out buying an item to bribe someone. Choosing not to tell his wife the truth, he ended up purchasing two of these items, because his wife was under the impression it was bought for the family. The situation of him running back and forth to purchase these items was funny to me; however, of course funny is relative. Also in the end, what was being done did not fly with me morally, even if the movie is a comedy.
Assessment of Fist Fight
To answer the question of if Fist Fight was funny, I would say there was a few funny parts in the movie. Overall, Charlie Day kept the movie sort of funny with his antics and his ability to act really scared of being beat up in a fist fight; however, I don’t think it was enough to save the movie. Ice Cube only frowned a lot during the film, and both resorted to inappropriate actions during the movie, including Ice Cube angrily walking around school with a baseball bat, etc. To make matters worse, a fight actually took place between the two teachers, which I guess was supposed to be the highlight of the movie.
Rating of Fist Fight
Based on a rating of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best, I rate Fist Fight 1 1/2 stars.
