If you have been wondering who excelled in providing the best video game deals for Black Friday, 2016, you’ve come to the right place. Here you will find my assessment of several retail and online outlets that sells and advertises Black Friday video game sales. The Black Friday video game sales showcase establishments that stood out as well as those who fell beneath the passing bar. If the particular store you frequent either online or in a brick and mortar bulding is not listed and you would like to have it included next time, send your request to http://www.moms-minute.com.
Without further ado, let’s proceed with the grading of the Black Friday video game sales. Similar to many schools’ grading metric, an “A” is at the high end of the scale, depicting superior video game Black Friday sales, and “F” is of course, at the low end and indicates failure to meet expectations -- in other words -- unsatisfactory.
Grading will start from the lower/sub-par performers and end on a high note, showcasing the store that exceeded others in bringing excellent video game deals on Black Friday.
Grading is done independent of how the stores performed the previous year. Each grading year starts anew--similar to actual school/academic grading systems.
Sears - Grade F
GameStop - Grade D
Dell - Grade D-
In my opinion, Dell is a reputable PC company; however, the company needs to work harder to make a bigger impact in the video game industry relative to Black Friday sales. The inventory and variety of video games offered by Dell were low when compared to some other retailers. Dell has a Battlefield 1 Xbox One S, 500 GB system plus you get a Gears of War 4 video game and one extra controller for $249.99. Nothing much else to write home about.
NewEgg - Grade C-
NewEgg did not post any impressive video game sales for Black Friday. The store offered the PS4 and Xbox One Uncharted 4 bundle at the same price as most other retail establishments that sell these systems. Other video games were not competitively priced. For example, Dishonored 2 for the PS4 sells for $34.99 as well as Tomb Raider and Gears of War 4. A first for me was to see an “Out of Stock” message posted on the site for the Call of Duty, Infinite Warfare for the Xbox One. Could it be there was only one system to be sold and when it finally sold, they prominently posted the Out of Stock sign which to some may mean this item was in high demand? Not to belay this point, NewEgg is below average when it comes to Black Friday video game sales receiving a C-.
Kohls - Grade C
Steam - Grade C
You may have noticed that Steam seems to have big sales throughout the year, instead of just Black Friday. Steam continues its tradition with its Autumn sale which happens around Black Friday. I like that Steam sometimes lets you know the percentage the sale is over the regular price so you get a better idea of the amount of money you are saving on video games. For example, The Division is selling for $13.39 which is 50% off the regular price, Quantum Break is on sale for $29.99 which is 25% off, Elders Scrolls V Skyrim is on sale for a low $6.59.
Microsoft - Xbox One - Grade C
Just your average video game sale at Microsoft -- nothing spectacular. BattleFront is selling for $15.00, regular price $29.99; Elder Scrolls V Skyrim is on sale for $30.00, regular price $59.99, and Call of Duty Infinite Warfare is selling for $59.99, a savings of $20.00. Other deals are the PS4 Witcher III Wild Hunt, on sale $24.99 for PS Plus members and $29.99 for non-members, regular price is $49.99 and Destiny, The Collection, $39.59 for PS Plus members and $44.59 for non members -- regular price is $59.99 I think Microsoft could have cut the prices more, especially since selling games online that are downloadable is less expensive to the retailer than physical copies.
Sony - PlayStation 4 - Grade C+
Toys R Us - Grade B
In keeping with most of the other retail stores that sell video games, Toys R Us had the Uncharted 4 bundle selling for the same price of $249.99. Toys R Us also is selling the Nintendo 3DS for $99.99 which seems to be the standard price of this system, since it sells for this price at Best Buy and Target as well as other places. Regarding video games -- Mafia III, Titanfall II and Fallout 4 are on sale for $39.99 -- regular price is $59.99. Toys R Us also is selling the Atari Flashback 7 and the Genesis Classic Game Console for $29.99 each, regular price is $44.99. If you are in the market for an XBox live membership, you can get a card with a 3 month subscription for $14.99, a savings of $10.00. Video game deals include Xbox One Terraria, and PS4 Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare at a sale price of 2 for $25.00 Toys R Us get a high grade due to the wide variety and quantity of video games on sale on Black Friday in addition to the low prices.
Best Buy - Grade B+
Best Buy is known for long lines around the Black Friday timeframe. Usually the line is for unusually low priced big screen television sets instead of the video games or some other extraordinary low-priced items. That being said, this was not the case for video games; however, Best Buy is an excellent place to shop for Black Friday deals. Best Buy has the XBox One S with 1TB, 1 wireless controller and the Battlefield 1 video game for $249.99, regular price $299.99. The Xbox One Overwatch, Titanfall 2, Tomb Raider and Call of Duty Black Ops is selling for $34.99 each, regular price $59.99. Fallout 4 and Dishonored 2 are on sale for $19.99
Walmart - Grade A-
Even though Walmart still gets an A-, let’s see why Walmart lost its first place standing. To get straight to the point, the deal breaker was the difference in prices relative to the most recent video games that were released, i.e. Mafia III and others.
However, Walmart still has some great video game Black Friday sales. They include Battlefield 1 Xbox One S bundle for $249.99, regular price is $299.99. You can also get an Xbox Live 60 month membership for $25.00.
Target - Grade A
And our new winner is…. Drum Roll …. Target. Target gets an A this year and for the first time surpassed Wal-Mart in pricing for video games during Black Friday sales. The rubber hit the road when Target had a rather impressive video game sale, just before Black Friday -- offering a free video game, if one bought two video games.
However, since my grading is on Black Friday sales let’s focus on Black Friday. Target “out low-priced” Walmart on some of the most recent video games.
For example, The Elders Scrolls V Skyrim, Destiny, Mafia III, FIFA 17, and Madden 17 for the PlayStation 4 is on sale for only $29.99; regular price $59.99. Gears of War 4, Grand Theft Auto V and NBA 2k17 for the Xbox One is also on sale for this price. By contrast, the same video games are on sale at Walmart for $35.00 vice $29.99. For other video game, Target sometimes matched if not surpassed Walmar in offering lower prices.
Congrats to Target for getting an A on the Black Friday sales. Keep up the good work!
Remember, there are other considerations when deciding to choose a particular store to purchase video games during Black Friday sales. For instance, if the retail establishment is far away from your place of residence, your commute could eat up the savings in gas. Take this, as well as other circumstances in account when deciding where you will purchase your video games. The comparison above is absolute and bars situations I just described. Above all, have fun shopping and remember it’s nice to get a good sale on video games during Black Friday, but it is even more important to be vigilant and safe. Safe and Happy Black Friday Shopping!
