Sega today announced that it has secured the rights to the fan-favorite horror series Aliens from Twentieth Century Fox. Financial details were not disclosed.

According to the announcement, Sega will produce "multiple titles" based on the sci-fi series, including a first-person shooter and a role-playing game. The games will arrive for "next-gen consoles" -- most likely the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The press release notes that the first title is not expected to arrive until 2009.

A follow-up piece from The Hollywood Reporter states that the games will draw upon the film's universe rather than re-tell the events from the films. "We're taking licensing to the next level with this franchise," Sega VP of Business Development Rob Lightner told the outlet. "Everything is on the table."

The Hollwood Reporter also spoke with the game's senior producer, Mike Gallo. "We're also looking at all Alien source material for inspiration....we may incorporate some characters that fans know and love, and we may let gamers find answers to questions that were left unanswered in the movies."

The last major game based on the Aliens films, Alien Vs. Predator 2, was released in 2003 for the PC.
